Neighborhood | Buena Vista

Just above the Parnassus and Ashbury Heights neighborhood rises the slopes of Buena Vista Park, a densely wooded 36-acre urban escape in the center of the city. Climb the stairs at Haight and Baker and you'll rapidly ascend to fantastic views of the city, the Golden Gate Bridge, and Angel Island. The local neighborhood association has done a fantastic job in making the park family friendly.

Buena Vista/Ashbury homes include fine examples of grand Victorians, colonial revival, restored carriage houses, shingled Tudors, and Queen Anne towers, boasting ornate scroll work, onion domes and stained glass windows.

Parnassus/Ashbury Heights neighborhood is primarily residential, full of young families and professionals. On Halloween, the best block party for five year olds in San Francisco can be found on Belvedere Street, which closes to traffic and attracts thousands of kids and their families. Entire blocks are decorated. Most residents shop and dine downhill along nearby Cole Street in Cole Valley, the small markets on Parnassus, and the Haight. Golden Gate Park is a short walk away.

Access to public transportation is excellent. The 37 CORBETT bus stops on Buena Vista Avenue East, and offers connections to Market Street buses and trolleys. The 7 HAIGHT bus stops at Haight and Baker Streets, and travels downtown via Haight and Market Streets. The N JUDAH trolley that connects Ocean Beach to downtown San Francisco stops at Carl and Cole, which makes commuting quick.

surrounding local neighborhoods:
haight ashbury

At the center of Haight Ashbury is one of the most famous intersections in America. The epicenter of the counter culture movement, home to the Grateful Dead, the Haight Ashbury Free clinic, and the hippies of the 60s, today Haight Ashbury still retains a heady whiff of those free-spirited days, grounded by a new civic awareness and neighborhood pride.

Tourists still come from around the world to check out the action on Haight Street, and they find plenty of it. Trendy boutiques like Upper Playground, Buffalo Exchange and American Apparel sell the coolest looks. Independent record store Amoeba offers free in-store performances and proves there's still life in the music industry. When the hubbub of Haight Street proves too much, Golden Gate Park, with its new world-class museums, the DeYoung and the California Academy of Sciences, offer a calm oasis.

Renovation of the neighborhood Victorians continues apace. Converted to apartments in the 60s these homes are being rediscovered by families who take them on as hobby, pastime, passion, and investment. For families with young kids, the Haight Ashbury Coop Nursery School, now in its third decade, provides an inexpensive alternative to day care from its home in the Alma Street playground.

nopa

The North of Panhandle area, or Nopa, is rapidly becoming one of the city's most in-demand neighborhoods. Situated just north of Golden Gate Park's Panhandle, and abutted by the Divisadero corridor, you'll always feel there's something to do, and within walking distance! Here you'll feel central to everything, with easy freeway access via Fell and Oak streets, several Muni lines at your doorstep, and very easily navigable bicycle routes. And yet, the nearby green spaces imbue the entire area with a low key, peaceful air.

Services and entertainment are easily accessed, making car-free living a very appealing lifestyle choice. In addition to Divisadero's many trendy cafes, clubs and shops, you can do your grocery shopping at the Lucky Center on Fulton, and hit up Broderick Place for speciality deli goods. Homes near the Panhandle are exceptionally desirable.

It's also a great spot to bike, shoot hoops or just chill out by the bandstand. Young professionals and students, families, and long-time residents fill up Nopa's many Victorian and Edwardian single family homes and multi-unit buildings. There are plenty of opportunities to meet your neighbors, be it at Sunday's Divisadero Farmer's Market or the bi-monthly Divisadero Art Walk. The North of Panhandle Neighborhood Association does a wonderful job of organizing events and keeping everyone informed of neighborhood news. The neighborhood even has its own parents' group.

cole valley

Despite its relatively small size, Cole Valley is surrounded by some of San Francisco’s most popular landmarks. The homes in the Cole Valley neighborhood epitomize the phrase “modern luxury.” Beautiful ocean views and fully-remodeled interiors make Cole Valley an incredibly popular place to live. With so many great public parks and activities within walking distance, plus the Golden Gate Bridge just a short trip north, Cole Valley does not disappoint!

Cole Valley is perfect for executives and researchers of the University of California, San Francisco who want an easy commute. Located less than half a mile from the neighborhood, the Parnassus Heights campus is within walking distance of Cole Valley. Notable research/medical facilities at UCSF include Regeneration Medicine and Stem Cell Research, the Diabetes Center, and the Helen Diller Medical Center.

The Cole Valley neighborhood is also a mile away from the 1000+ acre Golden Gate Park. Residents can easily spend hours here and never run out of things to explore! Some of the more notable landmarks in Golden Gate Park include:

Japanese Tea Garden: Built in 1894, the Garden is a great place to meditate and enjoy nature any time of day.
Koret Playground and Carousel: Located in the southeast corner of the park, closest to Cole Valley, both kids and adults can enjoy all the fun and games at this beautiful public playground.

Archery Fields: Whether you want to keep your skills sharp or learn a new skill altogether, this facility provides bales of hay; all you need are your own targets and equipment.

This is just a small sampling of the many activities you can find at Golden Gate Park. Of course, there is always the option of finding a grassy spot and just enjoying the beautiful California sunshine.

If you love enjoying great food, beer, and wine, Cole Valley is the place for you. Start your day with a short (or long) visit to La Boulangerie and enjoy their French-American pastries and entrees along with some fantastic coffee or espresso. Other notable restaurants in Cole Valley include the Italian wine nook InoVino, the quaint corner tavern Kezar Bar & Restaurant, the casual-yet-popular BurgerMeister, and last but not least, the eclectic offerings of Padrecito.

Cole Valley is also within walking distance (and home to) several popular and interesting landmarks. Cole Hardware’s flagship store is located in Cole Valley and has been serving the community for almost 100 years. You can walk to the infamous Haight-Ashbury district or take a hike up Mt Sutro for great views and see one of the old NIKE missile silos. Interested in geography? Walk up Clayton towards 17th to see the blank monument for the reported perfect geographic center of SF

One of the best parts about living in Cole Valley is its convenient access to the N Judah municipal light rail (“Muni”) route. Residents of Cole Valley can hop on this frequently-running light rail and commute to the Google headquarters in less than 30 minutes. The N Judah route is also ideal for traveling to landmarks such as the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and Embarcadero Plaza.
